Y6 PGL 2024

Year 4 had a brilliant time as they stepped back in history for Viking Day. Pupils were fully immersed in the spirit of the event, exploring when the Vikings invaded Britain and the reasons behind their journeys. They even became archaeologists for the morning, carefully excavating artefacts from over a thousand years ago. Using the objects they uncovered, pupils worked like real historians to determine whether the items belonged to a man or woman, a farmer or a warrior and whether the owner might have been rich or poor. They also investigated a mysterious object, using clues and careful inference to decide what it might have been and how it could have been used.

Back in the classroom, pupils designed and named their own Viking swords and used quills and ink to write letters imagining how they would respond if Vikings were invading their home.

In the afternoon, pupils travelled even further into the past to discover how Anglo-Saxons and Vikings lived. They played a traditional Viking game, tried on different helmets, wove sticks to build a section of wall for a Viking-style home and even practised shooting a bow and arrow to “hunt” for prey.

Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and were buzzing with excitement and new knowledge.

One parent even took the time to email in with the following –

Please can you pass on our thanks to the Y4 team for an absolutely brilliant Viking day. Lennon has come home buzzing about it, and has spent over half an hour excitedly telling us about all the activities he did, and lots of historical facts that he’s learnt. It’s lovely to see him so excited about his learning. Thanks to everyone involved.
