History Intent, Implementation & Impact

Intent

  • Provide an engaging, inspiring and challenging History curriculum for all pupils, which promotes curiosity and supports the development of key historical knowledge, skills and concepts.
  • Gain a secure chronological understanding of people, events and contexts from a range of historical periods in Britain’s past and the wider world.
  • Recognise similarities and differences within and across historical periods.
  • To conduct enquiries into historical themes and questions to form their own opinions and interpretation of the past based on evidence and use this to think critically, weigh evidence and consider how History has influenced their lives today.
  • Think critically and analytically as historians by beginning to differentiate between different source types and explain how and why interpretations in History may differ.
  • Discover connections between the History they learn and the wider community today, helping them to appreciate diversity in the modern world and their place within it.

Implementation

Lessons are carefully planned and History is taught through:

  • A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth;
  • Trips, experience days and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience;
  • In KS1, the Historical skills will focus on the world around them and their living memory of History before moving to events that go beyond living history. This will ensure a firm foundation for KS2 History;
  • In KS2, the History curriculum is set out to allow pupils to reference the previous events in time and to refer to this prior learning year-on-year and within the year.
  • The progression of skills is set out in order to build and develop the following:
    • Chronological Understanding
    • Knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes in the past
    • Connection and Historical Links
    • Interpretations of History
  • Lessons will develop long term memory by allowing for repetition of learning within the year and year on year;
  • Vocabulary is taught within the unit and reinforced throughout the year;
  • SMSC is threaded through the History curriculum to link history to their lives and explore their heritage and cultural capital.

Impact

Our History Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes;
  • Data tracked termly;
  • A celebration of learning (fab finishes) for each term which demonstrates progression across the school;
  • Pupils become increasingly critical and analytical within their thinking. Making informed and balanced judgements based on their knowledge of the past;
  • Pupils are increasingly aware of how historical events have shaped the world that they currently live in;
  • They have a further understanding of History on a local level and on a small-scale;
  • Pupils develop enquiry skills to pursue their own interests within a topic and further questioning;
  • Where applicable, pupils encounter or participate in high-quality visits/visitors to further appreciate the impact of History;
  • Pupils retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning.
