Pupils at Charnock Hall Primary Academy are taking the lead in transforming their local area, championing safer travel and positive community action.

Charnock Hall, which is part of the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, has introduced a series of initiatives that are already making a visible difference in the local community. Liaising with the PTA, pupils are playing an active role in community improvement, including organising litter picking activities to help keep the surrounding area clean and welcoming for residents.

Pupils have also taken on roles as Junior Road Safety Officers, encouraging families to think differently about how they travel to school. To make walking routes more engaging, pupils have placed star markers on lampposts along the route to Charnock Hall, offering a fun way to guide younger children to the school and promoting healthier and more sustainable journeys.

Alongside these pupil-led initiatives, the academy has liaised with its PTA, Birley Ward Councillors, City Council and local residents to make significant improvements to Charnock Recreation Ground car park, to better serve both the school and the wider community. Working in partnership with the community, potholes have been filled and new tarmac laid, resulting in a safer and more accessible space for pupils, parents and local residents and park visitors.

Charnock Hall Primary Academy also regularly opens its doors to the community, with local groups using the site outside of school hours. This includes musical theatre companies, football clubs, martial arts sessions and yoga classes, as well as partnerships with alternative provision and NHS speech and language services.

Paul Burgess, Headteacher at Charnock Hall Primary Academy, said:

“We are incredibly proud of how our pupils are taking an active role in their community, putting CHPA values into practice. These initiatives are helping them to understand the importance of looking after their environment and making positive choices, while also making a real difference to the local area.  As a result of this work and our strong community links, CHPA is a hub of the local community, a hub, which we want to further develop with existing and new partners as we move forward.

Councillor Denise Fox said:

”I am pleased I, and other Birley Ward Councillors have had the opportunity to work with Mr Burgess, the Charnock PTA and pupils at CHPA on numerous local improvement initiatives and I look forward to creating more opportunities in the future.”
