RE Intent, Implementation & Impact

Intent

  • To provide an exciting, fun and creative RE curriculum for all pupils.
  • To engage pupils in sustained shared thinking about different religions and worldviews.
  • To support pupils to develop the skills they need to question, debate, compare and assess different questions.
  • To develop in pupils an aptitude for dialogue so that they can participate positively in our society, with its diverse religions and beliefs.
  • To explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how people live.
  • To provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religions and beliefs, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.
  • To ensure that pupils understand why RE is relevant to their lives now and in the future.

Implementation

At Charnock Hall Primary Academy, we understand that Religious Education equips pupils to make sense of and understand the diverse world around them. Through a secure knowledge and understanding of religious and world views, pupils are able to respect and appreciate the contribution made to our society by people of all backgrounds, religions and belief systems. Our teaching of Religious Education follows the guidance given in the latest Agreed Syllabus for Sheffield.

The Agreed Syllabus for RE in Sheffield 2024-2029

Using this Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, we will enable our pupils to discover more about religion as well as other world views as we assist them to apply their learning to a range of topics. Our pupils are encouraged to express ideas and insights into key questions. They will take part in lessons, receive visitors to school sharing a range of religious viewpoints and undertake their own visits to varied places of worship (photos to follow)

Through these experiences they will gain insights and knowledge to help equip them as responsible citizens, ready to contribute positively to our society and the wider world.

The three-fold aims of RE in Sheffield will ensure that our pupils:

As our community demographic is broadly Christian here at Charnock, we explore Christianity- along with another religion- in every year group. This allows us to build on children’s prior knowledge, encouraging deeper thinking. We hope that this will result in our pupils constructing strong beliefs and values which they are confident to express in the wider community.

At CHPA, we timetable 30-40 minutes to RE learning each week. Our RE curriculum (taken from the Sheffield SACRE) encourages the pupils to learn about Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism through a range of exciting teaching activities.

CHPA has strong links with our local church and community. We support them in a variety of ways throughout the year such as, collecting and delivering food boxes to our local food bank.

We have regular ‘Open the Book’ assemblies led by Reverend Cliff Kay and his team. These assemblies are engaging and involve drama and re-enactments which pupils love! (see photos)

Pupils enjoy visiting the local church for services at Harvest time and ‘Christingle’ at Christmas time (see photos)

By following the Agreed Syllabus, RE will also contribute to a whole range of school priorities.  Study of religious and world views will also promote spiritual, cultural, social and moral development, and will support pupils’ understanding of British Values such as acceptance and respect for others who hold different world views.

Impact

Religious Education is a crucial part of CHPA life and learning and it is for this reason that CHPA is dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high-quality RE curriculum. The pupils at CHPA enjoy learning about different religions, cultures and ways of life. Through their R.E learning, pupils are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world.  We endeavour to ensure that our RE curriculum equips each child with the skills and knowledge needed to understand the wide range of religious beliefs in their community. Pupils gain a firm foundation of knowledge and skills to see them equipped to take on further learning in Secondary School. Pupil’s skills and knowledge are assessed by the class teacher, throughout lessons and a summative assessment is completed termly. This informs the RE coordinator of any further areas for curriculum development, pupil support and/or training requirements for staff.

Religious Celebration Days

At CHPA, we celebrate RE throughout the year with a focused afternoon to further raise the profile of RE in school. These celebrations are launched through a whole school assembly approach and then activities are carried out and completed in individual classes as well as through mixing classes and key stages. Activities are all aimed to be practical, fun and engaging.

This academic year 2024/25 we will be celebrating:
